We are right in the heart of Cathar country, an incredibly violent but interesting time in French history where big battles were fought between the Catholics and mysterious Cathars, the remnants of which are a number of 20 amazing castles and abbeys that have been used as the backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters and they themselves sit atop mountains looking out over the Pyrenees on one side, the black mountains to the north and the Mediterranean to the east.

As well as the castles themselves, the walled city of Carcassonne is a UNESCO world heritage site and has been the stage for an annual month long festival where big names such as Bob Dylan, Elton John and Sting have headlined. There are records of the Waystation itself being a stopping point for the Cathar armies from those times. All of these places are within a short drive from us
